Beforeandafterdecides how it looks in ten years
Proper preparation and aftercare are just as important as the tattoo itself. Here's everything you need to know – before the session, after it and after laser removal.
How to prepare
01Appointment
Let me know about changes or cancellations as early as possible, ideally 48 hours ahead. Cancellations less than 24 hours before are subject to a fee.
02Skin
Moisturise regularly with a good cream for a few days beforehand. Avoid sunburn and excessive tanning – damaged skin can't be tattooed.
03Shaving
If the area needs shaving, leave it to me. That way we avoid unnecessary irritation.
04Food and drink
Eat well and drink plenty of water. A full stomach keeps your blood sugar stable and lowers the risk of fainting.
05Alcohol and caffeine
No alcohol or other substances for at least 24 hours – they thin the blood. Cut down on caffeine, it increases nervousness and sensitivity to pain.
06Exercise
Skip intense exercise on the day of your tattoo so your skin isn't tense or irritated.
07Clothing
Comfortable, with easy access to the tattoo area. Expect it may get stained with ink or petroleum jelly.
08Design
Have a specific idea? Bring pictures, sketches or inspiration. If not, we'll create the design together.
09Mindset and company
Some areas hurt more than others – tell me if you're worried. You can bring someone along, just please keep it to a minimum.
10Health
Tell me in advance about skin conditions, allergies or blood thinners. If you have a fever or feel unwell, we'll move the appointment.
How your tattoo heals
01Wrap
Keep the wrap on for as long as I tell you at the session. Then remove it carefully.
02Washing
Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented soap, pat dry with a clean paper towel – don't rub.
03Moisturising
A thin layer of the recommended cream several times a day. Less is more – your skin needs to breathe.
04No scratching
Itching and peeling are a normal part of healing. Don't pick scabs, let them fall off on their own.
05Water and sun
No pool, bath, sauna or tanning bed while healing. Sun only once healed, and always with high SPF.
06Clothing
Loose and clean so nothing rubs the tattoo. Sleep on clean sheets for the first few nights.
Care after removal
01Keep it clean
Gently clean the area with sterile water or the recommended product, always with clean hands.
02Healing cream
A thin layer of the recommended cream hydrates and supports healing. No greasy or scented products.
03Dressing
If I recommend it, cover the area with sterile gauze or a plaster and change the dressing regularly.
04Sun
UV light slows healing and irritates the skin. If you have to be in the sun, use high-SPF sunscreen.
05No scratching
Even if the area itches or scabs, don't scratch or peel it – you'll prevent infection and scarring.
06Water
Showering is fine, but don't soak the area in a pool, bath or lake for as long as I recommend.
07Complications
Redness, swelling, pus or lasting pain? Contact me or a doctor right away.
Every healing process is individual. If you're unsure or something doesn't look right – redness, swelling, pain – get in touch right away, not a week later.
Questions about aftercare?
Message or call me, I'm here to help after your session too. Better to ask once too often.
